H.E. Philippe Barbarin

Cardinal, Archbishop of Lyon

Nominated on 28 September 2003, he was created Cardinal-Priest of SS. Trinità al Monte Pincio by Pope John Paul II in the consistory of 21 October 2003.

Since November 2011, Cardinal Barbarin has been a permanent guest of the episcopal Commission for the Universal mission of the Church of the Bishops’ Conference of France. Beforehand, he was a member of the doctrinal Commission (between 2005 and 2011).

In November 2003, he was appointed member of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments and member of the Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life.

As Archbishop of Lyon, he is also chancellor of the Catholic University of Lyon.

Cardinal Philippe Barbarin was made Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the Holy Sepulchre on 24 April 2010.

He was made Knight of the Legion of Honour on 31 December 2002, Officer of the [French] National Order of Merit on 8 May 2007 and Officer of the Legion of Honour on 15 April 2012.
